Different Approaches to Aristotelian Philosophy in the Jewish Middle Ages Aristotle’s De anima as a Test Case

The talk will formulate a certain hypothesis concerning the rise and fall of Jewish philosophy during the Middle Ages. It will do so by focusing on the two main protagonists of the Jewish Aristotelian tradition: Maimonides and Gersonides, and particularly on their theories of intellect. The talk will focus mainly on Maimonides’ failure in turning Judaism into a religion based on true beliefs, and the effect this failure had on Jewish Aristotelians from the generation of Gersonides onward.
